The “balloon” organization in Raqqa is implementing the “share digital peace” campaign, which lasts for three weeks via social media, and aims to renounce hate speech and peaceful and non-violent interaction through these means.
The campaign’s activities include holding sessions on the definition of hate speech, its causes and its impact on society as a whole, where 15 civil, social and media activists attended the discussions.
The activists are participating in the “share digital peace” hashtag launched by the organization as part of the “trends” project implemented with the support of the British cultural center, according to Osama al-thakhira, executive director of the “balloon” organization.
Ammunition said that the main goal of the project is peaceful and non-violent interaction on social media, building a more peaceful digital society, and combating hate speech.
He pointed out that through the project, they seek to highlight the negative comments on social networking sites, and the sharp hate speech spread during the recent period on those sites.
Activists in this field, for their part, praised the campaign, but it is only a small step within a very wide field, hoping for more measures to reduce digital violence, which sometimes turns into reality.
One of the participants told beisan FM that this campaign is not enough to limit hate speech on social media, calling for laws on this matter and imposing sanctions against those who practice this speech.
Another participant called for the launch of larger projects to reduce hate speech, although he stressed the importance of the current project.
The trends project started in early June and will last for 5 months, and is being implemented by male and female media professionals trained by the organization earlier.
